There was the bang. Then a week of “it seems fine, I think I got away with it.” Now the steering wheel shimmies at 60 on the M77 and you are starting to wonder.
Here is the reframe that matters most. The outer face of the wheel, the bit everybody inspects, is the least likely place to find the damage.

Quick answer: A buckled alloy usually shows as a vibration that gets worse with speed, a wheel that will not balance, or a slow leak at the rim. The damage is often on the inner rim where it cannot be seen. Diagnosis needs the wheel on a balancer with a runout gauge, not a visual check.
The five signs of a buckled wheel
1. Vibration that increases with speed. Now read the location, because it narrows things down before anything comes off the car.
- Felt through the steering wheel → usually a front wheel
- Felt through the seat or the floor → usually a rear wheel
2. A wheel that will not balance. Either it needs unusually heavy weights, or it balances perfectly on the machine and still vibrates on the road.
That second one confuses people, and it is a very strong indicator. Balance weight cannot compensate for a wheel that is not round.
3. A slow leak at the rim. A flat spot at the bead seat that no amount of resealing will cure. See alloy wheels leaking around the bead.
4. A visible flat spot, lip damage or a kink. Check the inner rim. Turn the steering to full lock and use a torch.
Run a hand around the inner flange, carefully. Damaged rim edges are genuinely sharp.
5. Changed handling. A pull, a wander, or a steering wheel that now sits off centre. That often means the strike moved the alignment as well. See why a car pulls to one side.
An honest caveat. Vibration is not always the wheel. A separated or damaged tyre, a lost balance weight, a seized brake or a worn bearing can all mimic it.
Which is exactly why a wheel goes on a balancer instead of being condemned on sight.
Where the damage actually is
The inner flange and inner bead seat take most pothole strikes.
Think about the geometry. As the tyre drops into the hole and then meets the far edge, that inner edge is the one it rolls over and slams into.
The outer face, the part everyone walks round and inspects, is usually only marked in a kerb strike, which is an entirely different injury.
So here it is again, because this is the myth the page exists to kill: an unmarked, spotless looking wheel can be significantly buckled. TyreSafe makes the same point to drivers nationally — hidden cracks and misalignment from a pothole strike are often invisible without a proper check, even when the wheel looks fine on the outside.
Why low profiles suffer worse
Less sidewall means less rubber to absorb the impact, so more of the energy reaches the rim.
An 18, 19 or 20 inch wheel with a low aspect ratio tyre is far more likely to buckle than a 15 inch wheel with a tall sidewall. A 35 profile has barely anything to give.
Run flats add to it too. Their stiffer sidewalls transmit more shock straight to the rim.
That specification, big rims and low profiles, is exactly what sits on a lot of the premium cars around Bearsden, Newton Mearns and the West End of Glasgow. It is not a coincidence that those are the cars we see buckled wheels on.
How it is properly diagnosed
The tyre often stays on for an initial check. A proper assessment usually needs it off, so both bead seats and the whole inner face can be seen.
The wheel goes on a balancer and is measured with a dial gauge for:
- Lateral runout, side to side wobble
- Radial runout, out of round
Tolerances are small. A wheel out by more than around a millimetre will generally not run smoothly, and no amount of balance weight fixes a wheel that is not round. Exact tolerances vary by wheel and manufacturer.
Road force balancing, where available, measures the wheel and tyre together as an assembly under load. It can tell you whether the problem is the wheel, the tyre, or the specific combination of the two.
The wheel is also checked for cracks, and leak tested in a water bath.

Can it be repaired?

How straightening works. The wheel is measured, then heat and a hydraulic press are used to work the rim back toward true, re measuring as it goes. It is skilled, specialist work and it is entirely legitimate.
Cracks: the balanced position
Some specialists offer welded repairs to cracked alloys, and competent ones exist.
The reasons to be cautious are real though. There is no consumer facing certification standard for a repaired road wheel. Several manufacturers advise against repair. And the wheel is a structural component carrying your car at motorway speed.
Our default position is replacement, particularly for a crack near the bead seat, the spokes or the hub face.
If you do choose repair, use a specialist who will document what was done and leak test and runout test it afterwards. Get that in writing.
MOT note. A wheel that is damaged or distorted such that it affects the tyre’s seating is an MOT failure item. Check the current DVSA inspection manual wording.
Is it safe to drive on?
If it is losing air: no. See why a tyre keeps losing air.
If it is cracked: no. Recover it.
If it is a mild buckle that is holding pressure, short low speed local journeys while you get it sorted is a judgement call.
Understand what is happening though. A buckle stresses the tyre bead, the wheel bearing and the suspension on every single rotation. And the vibration itself is a distraction at speed.
The straight advice: get it looked at within days rather than months, and do not do a long motorway run on it.
Replacing it: what to check before you buy
Getting a replacement wrong is expensive and occasionally dangerous. Check all six.
- Size and width, for example 8J x 18
- Offset (ET). Get this wrong and the wheel fouls the arch or the suspension, and the geometry changes
- PCD, the bolt pattern
- Centre bore, and whether spigot rings are needed
- Load rating. Critical, and routinely ignored on cheap aftermarket wheels
- Whether a TPMS sensor needs transferring or supplying. See TPMS sensor replacement

One practical note: matching a single replacement to three weathered wheels rarely looks great. Worth factoring into the decision, particularly on a car you plan to sell.
The claim, briefly
Who you claim from depends entirely on which road it happened on, and the evidence needs collecting immediately before the hole is filled.

Reducing the risk
Slow down for standing water. You cannot see the depth of what is underneath it, and Glasgow provides a lot of opportunities to find out the hard way.
Do not brake hard at the moment of impact. This one is counter intuitive and it matters. IAM RoadSmart’s guidance says exactly this: if you do brake for a pothole, release the brake so the wheel can roll into it, which cuts the impact.
Braking pitches weight forward and compresses the front suspension, which means the wheel meets the far edge of the hole with less travel available. Brake before, then release over it.
Keep pressures correct. An under inflated tyre offers far less protection to the rim.
If you are specifying a car or a set of wheels, understand the trade off honestly. Bigger wheels and lower profiles look better and buckle more easily.
Alloy wheel cover is worth considering on a car with expensive wheels. That is a consideration to weigh up, not advice.
A pattern from the van
Our buckled wheel calls spike after a freeze and thaw, same as our pothole tyre calls. Late winter is the busy period.
There is a second correlation that is just as reliable. The cars with the worst buckles are almost always the ones with the biggest wheels and the shortest sidewalls.
The conversation goes the same way most times. The customer walks us round the outside of the wheel, points at an unmarked face and says they cannot see anything wrong.
Then we take it off, put a torch on the inner flange, and there it is.
