Two things make Ayr different from an inland town, and both of them show up in the work we do.

The first is salt. Ayr is a seafront town with a working harbour, and cars parked near the esplanade sit in salt laden air every day of the year. Salt does not care about your tread depth. It attacks valve stems, TPMS sensor bodies and alloy rims, and it is why we replace more corroded valves per job in Ayr than we do in Lanarkshire. If your pressure warning light comes on, clears, then comes back a week later, corrosion is a likely suspect.

The second is what happens on rural roads in winter. The Ayrshire Roads Alliance looks after over 2,400km of carriageway across South and East Ayrshire on a three tier priority system. A class and strategic routes get treated first, B class local distributors get treated when sub zero conditions persist, and the C class minor and rural roads are treated only as resources allow. That is a sensible way to run a winter service, but it does mean the lanes around Coylton, Dalrymple and the Carrick side stay untreated longest in a cold snap. Ice, frozen verges and edge damage follow.

Add the seasonal side of it. Ayr Racecourse meetings, the golf calendar, the coast road to Dunure and the holiday parks put a lot of unfamiliar drivers on narrow roads through the summer, often in loaded or towing vehicles. Unfamiliar road plus loaded vehicle is how verges get clipped and sidewalls get cut.

One practical note that applies to any vehicle sitting near the coast. Tyres age even when they are not being used, and salt air does not help. Check the four digit date code on the sidewall of a second car or a seasonal vehicle before you rely on it, rather than after the blowout.
