The Nut Is Not the Problem. The Wheel That Will Not Come Off Is
Nobody wants a locking nut removed. They want the wheel off.
Almost everyone who calls us about a wheel lock is really calling about something else. A puncture. A blowout. A sidewall split after a pothole. An MOT booked for Tuesday. The nut is just the thing standing in the way.
That matters, because a removal specialist takes the nut off and drives away. Your tyre is still flat. You are still waiting, and now you are waiting for a second van and a second bill.
We do both. The nut comes off and the tyre goes on in the same callout, at whatever hour you called.
There is a small detail on our quote form that makes this work: we ask about locking nuts up front, alongside your tyre size and registration. So the van leaves with the removal kit and your tyre together, instead of finding out on your driveway.
Honestly, that one question has saved more people a second callout than anything else we do.
Lost Key, Snapped Key, or a Key That No Longer Fits
Most pages on this subject say “lost key” and stop there. In practice the key is often sitting right where it should be, in the boot kit, and it has simply stopped working.
The key is gone
Bought the car and it was never handed over. A garage kept it. It fell out of the boot tray months ago and nobody noticed until the day it was needed. Common, but not the most common.
The key will not fit any more
This is the one people misdiagnose. The outer sleeve of a locking nut is a pressed-on chrome cap. Road salt gets under it, corrosion forms, and the cap swells by a fraction of a millimetre. The pattern underneath is fine. The key that worked last year now sits proud and spins. Nothing is lost and nothing is broken, the shape has just changed.
The key is worn or rounded
The splines get chewed by repeated use, particularly if the nut has been rattled on and off with an air gun. It grips a little less each time until one day it grips nothing at all.
The key has snapped
Sometimes in your hand, sometimes with a piece left sitting inside the nut. Messier, slower, and worth telling us about on the phone so we arrive expecting it.
The nut is seized or already rounded off
Winter salting from November through March seizes fixings solid. And a nut that somebody has already had a go at with a hammered-on socket is a harder job than the one it started as.
Locking bolts, not nuts
Plenty of VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes wheels use locking bolts rather than nuts. Same problem, different fixing, same visit.
Pothole season runs roughly January to March round here, which is exactly when most people find out their key stopped working.

Most Seized Locking Nuts Were Over-Tightened by Somebody Else
Here is the part I wish more drivers knew.
A locking nut is designed to be torqued to a set figure. An impact gun on full setting can put far more through it than that. The nut deforms slightly, the pattern wears, and the next person who tries to remove it cannot.
I have lost count of the wheels where the nut would not shift and the reason was an air gun in somebody else’s workshop two services ago.
So we do not refit that way. Wheel fixings go back on with a torque wrench, set to the figure for that vehicle. There is no single correct number, which is exactly why guessing with a gun causes the problem.
It takes maybe ninety seconds longer. It is the difference between a nut that comes off next time and one that does not.
Safe Removal, Not Brute Force
We identify the nut and the key first, because the failure mode decides the method. A corroded cap needs a different approach to a rounded nut, and both need a different approach to a snapped key.
From there it is either a master key that matches the original pattern, or an extractor socket that bites into what is left of the nut and backs it out. The wheel face gets protected either way.
The technique is slow and controlled. Force is the thing that damages alloys, not the tools.
Straight answer on the harder cases: a nut that has already been rounded off by a previous attempt takes longer, and we will tell you that before we start rather than after. If a particular nut cannot be dealt with where your car is sitting, you will hear it from us on the phone, not once the money has changed hands.
And if you were thinking of doing it yourself

Replacement Nuts, a New Locking Set, or Neither
Once the nut is off you have three choices, and none of them is complicated.
- Fit a standard nut to match the other three.
- Fit a fresh locking set with a new key.
- Or leave the wheel on standard nuts and accept that you have traded a little theft security for never having this problem again.
Worth knowing: if one nut has failed, the other three are the same age and have had the same winters. That is why taking all four off in one visit is common, and why it usually works out cheaper per nut than coming back.
There is also an option that is not our sale, and you should know about it. Most manufacturers can supply a replacement key against the key number or your VIN through a main dealer. It costs, it takes days, and it is no use at all if you are standing at the side of a road. But if you are not in a hurry, it is a perfectly sensible route.
Locking Wheel Nut Removal Cost in Glasgow
We do not publish a fixed price list, and I would rather explain why than pretend.
Across central Scotland the going rate for this work tends to sit somewhere around the mid teens per nut before VAT, plus a callout charge, with mileage added past a certain radius. Those are typical market figures for context, not our price list.
What actually moves the number: how many nuts are coming off, whether one is already rounded or seized, whether a tyre is going on at the same time, the time of day, and where you are.
You get a price before we travel. The price quoted is the price you pay, and that holds at 2am the same as it does at 2pm. Our reviews say more about that than we can.
The bigger saving is not the per-nut rate anyway. One callout that removes the nut and fits your tyre beats two callouts that each solve half the problem.
If the wheel is coming off because of a puncture or a damaged tyre, say so when you call. We bring the tyre and the removal kit together.
Where We Come To Across Glasgow and Nearby Towns
Roadside, driveway, work car park, multi-storey. If the car is there, we come to it, and that includes the M8 and M74 hard shoulders where you are not going anywhere without help.
Searching for wheel lock removal near me from a service station forecourt is fairly common at this point, and the honest answer is that the nearest van matters more than the nearest postcode.
We also cover Paisley, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Rutherglen and Cambuslang, and we run the same service further afield in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness.
Typical arrival across the urban area is 30 to 45 minutes. Further out it is longer, and we will give you a real window rather than a comfortable one when you call. If you are wondering whether anyone is even out at this hour near me, we are.
What Else We Do While We Are There
Mobile tyre fitting, puncture repair, wheel balancing and TPMS sensors are all standard van stock. If you drive for a living, our fleet and business customers page covers how we handle taxis, private hire and vans.
What Glasgow Drivers Say
Our Google Business Profile sits at 5.0 from 57 reviews. The themes repeat: how quickly somebody turned up at night, how fair the price stayed on an emergency callout, and Zack by name more often than anyone else on the team.

Locking Wheel Nut Questions We Get Asked
How do you remove a locking wheel nut without the key?
Either with a master key that matches the original pattern, or with an extractor socket that grips the outside of the nut and reverses it out. The nut is identified first, because a corroded one, a rounded one and a snapped-key one all need different handling. The wheel face is protected throughout.
Will removing a locking wheel nut damage my alloy wheel?
Not when it is done with the right tool and enough patience. Damage comes from force, not from extraction. A nut that has already been rounded off by a previous attempt is harder and slower, and we will say so before starting rather than after.
Why will my locking wheel nut key not fit any more?
Because the nut has changed shape, not the key. The pressed-on outer cap corrodes from road salt and swells slightly, so the pattern no longer matches. The key is usually fine. This is the single most common reason a key that worked perfectly last year suddenly spins or will not seat.
How much does locking wheel nut removal cost in Glasgow?
It depends on how many nuts, their condition, whether a tyre is being fitted at the same time, and where you are. We quote before we travel and the quoted price is what you pay. Removing all four in one visit usually works out cheaper per nut than doing them separately.
Can I get a replacement locking wheel nut key from the dealer?
Usually yes. Most manufacturers can supply one against the key number stamped on the original or against your VIN. It takes days and there is a cost, so it is no help if you are stranded. If you are not in a hurry and want to keep the original set, it is a reasonable route.
Do I have to replace the locking nuts afterwards?
No. You can fit a standard nut to match the others, fit a whole new locking set with a fresh key, or run standard nuts on all four and accept the security trade-off. Most people replace the set if the wheels are worth stealing and go standard if they are not.
How long does it take?
A straightforward nut is usually a matter of minutes. A seized or already rounded one takes longer, sometimes considerably. If we are fitting a tyre in the same visit, the removal is rarely the part that decides how long we are with you.
Can you do it at the roadside, or does my car need to go to a garage?
Roadside or driveway for the large majority of jobs, which is the whole point of a mobile service. We work in the dark and in the rain. If a particular nut is beyond what can safely be done where the car sits, we tell you on the phone.
Further reading: the DVSA MOT inspection manual, section 5 covers wheels and fixings, and TyreSafe is worth a look if the wheel is coming off because of the tyre itself.
