The A9 is the road that defines driving here, and it is a demanding one. Average speed cameras were installed along the Perth to Inverness stretch in October 2014 after a long run of serious collisions, and the dualling programme is still going, with completion now expected in the mid 2030s. In practice that means years of contraflows, temporary surfaces and narrow running lanes north of Perth. Temporary surfaces are hard on tyres, and a sudden deflation in a contraflow is a genuinely dangerous situation.
Broxden and Inveralmond damage

Worth knowing before you need it. The M90 crosses the Tay on the Friarton Bridge, and neither carriageway there has a hard shoulder. If you lose a tyre on that bridge you have nowhere safe to stop. Keep going carefully to a place you can pull off properly, then call us.

The A93 north to Blairgowrie and Glenshee, the A85 west towards Crieff and Comrie, the A94 towards Coupar Angus and the minor roads around Methven, Stanley, Dunning and Glencarse are where sidewalls get cut. Narrow carriageways, soft verges, farm traffic and forestry work all contribute.
Winter damage on untreated roads
Perth and Kinross runs a four category gritting system. Strategic routes and links to hospitals come first, minor rural roads to small settlements come later and only within working hours, and the lowest category, minor rural roads with no inhabitants, is not treated at all. Why Perthshire is hard on tyres
Perth is a small city carrying a very large amount of traffic, and that shapes everything about tyre failure here.
The A9 is the main factor. Long distance driving means sustained high speed, and sustained high speed means heat. Heat is what converts a small unnoticed puncture or a weakened sidewall into a blowout. Then there is the geography. Perth is where the flat farmland of the Carse meets the hills. Within half an hour you can be on the A93 heading for Glenshee, where the Cairnwell Pass is the highest public road in the United Kingdom at around 670 metres, with snow gates at Spittal of Glenshee that get closed in bad winters. Roads like that combine steep camber, frost damage and grit debris.
And winter here is not a mild inconvenience. On A9 single carriageway sections, only stop where there is a genuine safe area off the running lane.
What should I do if I lose a tyre on the Friarton Bridge?
There is nowhere safe to stop on that bridge, so do not try. Keep your speed down, keep control, and continue to the first place you can pull fully off the carriageway. Then call us with your location.
